Complete Guide

Selecting the Right Tailpipe Adapter

No garage exhaust system is complete without a tailpipe adapter. Tailpipe adapters (nozzles) capture the exhaust fumes that are generated in repair and service garages and direct them to the exhaust removal system. Garage exhuast removal systems are equipped with hoses, fans, ductwork, and additional accessories that work together to draw exhaust fumes from the source and outside, away from the building.

Tailpipe adapters attach directly to a vehicle's tailpipe or tailpipes to ensure that hazardous exhaust fumes are safely and effectively removed from garages and workshops. Utilizing tailpipe adapters also restricts the build up that can cause damage to the engine or other parts of the vehicles being serviced.

⚠ Safety Notice: Crushproof adapters are designed for naturally aspirated 4-cycle engines running at idle only, under no load. Always use with a fan and keep hose runs to 11 ft or less where possible. If you see any exhaust re-entering the space, shut the vehicle off immediately and contact our experts.

Crushproof-Hose tailpipe adapters are designed to handle temperatures of up to 600°F and help prolong the life of the exhaust hose. All of our crushproof adapters are available with an optional spring clamp, and some have a plug option. The Plug allows certains types of drops and hoses to be shut off when not in use.

When selecting a tailpipe adapter, it is important to understand the specific requirements of your application. Using a tailpipe adapter capable of handling your application demands will prevent safety hazards, increased expenses, hose failure, and lost production time. Determine which tailpipe adapter is best-suited for your application by considering the following below.

Types of Vehicle Exhaust

  • Twin pipes / dual exhaust
  • Vertical stacks (diesel trucks & buses)
  • Undercarriage exhaust
  • Flush-mounted tailpipes

Sizing Rule — Critical

  • Adapter I.D. must be ½" larger than tailpipe O.D.
  • Air gap keeps system temperatures manageable
  • Tight fit causes overheating & premature failure

Material: Rubber vs. Metal

  • Rubber — low-temp undercarriage exhaust
  • Metal — high-temp & vertical stack applications
  • Optional spring clamp or plug available

How Adapters Stay in Place

  • Hook and chain assembly attaches to vehicle frame
  • Suction cup style for flush-mounted tailpipes
  • Creates a capture shroud without damaging finish

Warning icon WARNING: Vehicle Exhaust is extremely dangerous and potentially deadly. We always recommend that any system be properly engineered to meet the specifications of your application. If you are using our Crushproof system, we recommend that you use it with a fan and as an intermittent repair solution only, not to be run for long periods of time. This hose is to be used only with naturally aspirated 4 cycle engines running at an idle and under no load. We recommend keeping any run of hose as short as possible preferably 11' or under and sized to include ambient air to cool the exhaust temperatures. This hose is designed to handle frequent temperatures up to 400° and intermittent temperatures to 600°. When using Crushproof hose for the first time, watch closely to verify that the exhaust is exiting the building as designed. IF YOU SEE ANY EXHAUST COMING BACK INTO THE SPACE, THE HOSE IS NOT BEING USED PROPERLY. TURN THE VEHICLE OFF IMMEDIATELY AND CALL OUR EXPERTS.
