The Complete Guide to Selecting the Right Tailpipe Adapter
No garage exhaust system is complete without a tailpipe adapter!
Tailpipe adapters or nozzles capture the exhaust fumes that are generated in repair and service garages and direct them to the exhaust removal system. Garage exhuast removal systems are equipped with hoses, fans, ductwork, and additional accessories that work together to draw exhaust fumes from the source and outside, away from the building.
Tailpipe adapters attach directly to a vehicle's tailpipe or tailpipes to ensure that hazardous exhaust fumes are safely and effectively removed from garages and workshops. Utilizing tailpipe adapters also restricts the build up that can cause damage to the engine or other parts of the vehicles being serviced.
Crushproof-Hose tailpipe adapters are designed to handle temperatures of up to 600°F and help prolong the life of the exhaust hose. All of our crushproof adapters are available with an optional spring clamp, and some have a plug option. The Plug allows certains types of drops and hoses to be shut off when not in use.
When selecting a tailpipe adapter, it is important to understand the specific requirements of your application. Using a tailpipe adapter capable of handling your application demands will prevent safety hazards, increased expenses, hose failure, and lost production time. Determine which tailpipe adapter is best-suited for your application by considering the following.
Types of Vehicle Exhaust
• Twin Pipes
• Dual Exhaust
• Vertical Stacks
• Undercarriage exhaust
Tailpipe Adapter Selection Factors
• Should be ½” larger than the largest serviceable tailpipe diameter
• Varies between models for overhead tailpipe orientation, undercarriage orientation, or both
What Material Should Be Used for What Applications?
• Metal should be used for high-temp and vertical exhausts
• Rubber should be used for low temp undercarriage exhausts
How Do Tailpipe Adapters Stay in Place?
A hook and chain assembly are attached to each adapter allowing it to be fixed to the frame of the vehicle.
Why There Should NOT Be a Tight Fit on the Tailpipe
The fit on a tailpipe must have room to allow ambient air and exhaust in to keep the system cool.
What Happens If My Exhaust Hose Is Smaller Than the Tailpipe?
If your hose is not sized to be 1/2" larger than the tailpipe you will run into temperature issues that will reduce hose life.
If the I.D. is too small, the friction from high amounts of vehicle exhaust will increase temperature causing pressure to decrease which ultimately results in various hose damages.
Straight tailpipe adapters are designed to accommodate exhaust hoses between 2 and 4 inches in diameter and include a hook and chain for proper tailpipe attachment.
Crushproof Clamping Tailpipe Adapters are a simple solution for almost any tailpipe style. They can handle temperatures of up to 600⁰F and are designed with an optional spring clamp or plug option.
Vertical Stack Tailpipe Adapters
Vertical tailpipe adapters are designed to accommodate hoses ranging between 4 to 6 inches in diameter and are made for use with diesel trucks and buses.
Dynamometer tailpipe adapters are designed to accommodate exhaust hoses between 3 and 4 inches in diameter. These oval tailpipe adapters are made for use with twin tailpipes up to 3 inches in diameter.
Twin tailpipe adapters are made to accommodate exhaust hoses between 3 and 4-inch diameters and are designed for use with vehicles that have twin tailpipes up to 3 inches in diameter.
Suction Cup tailpipe adapters are the perfect solution for vehicles with flush-mounted tailpipes because they stick to any vehicle without damaging the finish and hold the adapter in place to develop capture shroud.
Overall, tailpipe adapters are an essential component in garage exhaust removal systems and help establish clean, breathable air for the health and safety of technicians and staff, as well as the longevity of vehicles that are being repaired and serviced.

The opening of your tailpipe adapter should be slightly (at least 1/2") larger than the diameter of the largest tailpipe you are working with. For example if you work with tailpipes between 2" - 3.5" then you would want a tailpipe adapter / hose that has at least a 4" diameter.
